Q&A with our chief executive, Ed Holloway

Ed Holloway, CEO of the Macular Society, talks about the future of macular disease research, the vital support we provide to people affected by sight loss every day, and how important gifts in Wills are in the fight to Beat Macular Disease.

Inspiration and dedication to Beating Macular Disease

Q: One year into your role as chief executive, what has inspired you the most?

I think the biggest thing is just how incredibly passionate and committed everyone in the organisation is. That might sound like a cliché, but it genuinely feels like this group of people – our staff, volunteers, members and supporters – shares the same aim: to Beat Macular Disease. That passion and dedication is extraordinary and truly inspiring.

The future of macular disease research

Q: What is the current focus for the future of research into macular disease?

An area with enormous potential is increasing our involvement in research specifically focused on developing better treatments for macular disease. This could include funding clinical trials to test new treatments or making it easier and quicker to conduct clinical trials here in the UK.

I think there’s a significant opportunity for the Macular Society to step into this space and help drive the whole field forward.

Gift in Wills and their impact on research

Q: How do gifts in Wills impact the future of research?

Research of this kind – compared to what’s often called basic science – is much more expensive. That’s why we need even greater support from our generous community. Gifts in Wills are absolutely critical to funding this exciting work and driving the breakthroughs that could lead to new treatments and, one day, a cure for macular disease. I am incredibly grateful to the people who have left legacies, and to those intending to – they make this work possible.

Supporting people living with macular disease today

Q: What are people telling you that they need from you?

The need for more treatments – and treatments that are more effective. I also hear from our macular disease community just how important our day-to-day work is in supporting them. Whether that’s helping people feel informed about their condition and the treatments available, connecting them with others to share experiences and tips, or providing emotional support. Being there for our community is vital. It’s about offering hope for the future, but also practical help for today. That message has been reinforced again and again by everyone I’ve met who is affected by macular disease.

Looking ahead: A future without macular disease

Q: What are your hopes for the future?

Our mission is simple: to Beat Macular Disease for every person diagnosed. That’s what drives everyone in this amazing community. I truly believe we will get there with the support of people who give so generously with gifts in their Wills, and in many other ways. Together we will Beat Macular Disease.

I am hugely proud to be part of this amazing community, and I would like to thank you for your belief, commitment and support, as a valued member of this organisation.
